An AI legal assistant is software that uses large language models (LLMs) plus retrieval to help legal professionals perform knowledge-heavy tasks - researching issues, drafting clauses, summarizing discovery, or checking policies - faster and with an audit trail. Unlike a general-purpose chatbot, it runs on your documents (DMS/SharePoint/CLM) and enforces legal guardrails (permissions, jurisdictions, disclaimers). It does not replace legal judgment and must be supervised under professional-conduct rules (ABA, 2024).
Not the same as:
Legal research platforms – purpose-built, citator-aware, primary-law databases.
CLM systems – manage contract lifecycle, approvals, signatures, and repositories.
Digital paralegal / AI for lawyers – near synonyms; here we use “AI legal assistant” as the umbrella term.
Most mature deployments follow this pipeline:
Data ingestion → index DMS/CLM/KM; apply user/matter permissions.
Retrieval / knowledge grounding (RAG) → fetch only sources the current user is allowed to see.
Draft / analyze → LLM generates redlines, memos, intakes, clause extractions.
Human review → lawyer/paralegal validates authorities, confidentiality, and business position.
Audit / logging → store prompt, model, sources, reviewer; export to DMS for ISO 27001/NIST evidence.

Accountability. The lawyer remains responsible under ABA Model Rules; supervision must be documented.
Regulatory exposure. The EU AI Act requires transparency and possibly risk-management documentation for some legal uses.

No. It can draft/analyze, but a lawyer must review and deliver the advice to avoid UPL and ethics issues.
